The birth of the world wide web has been a boon the the nations, with the growth of the internet we have seen different perspectives online, people exercising the freedom to speech without any constraint, with the evolution of the same, we saw the birth of memes and followed by which the “Dank and edgy memes” that are defined as exceptionally unique or odd memes and essentially have lost the value due to the the overuse or the passing trends.

The child of today is exposed to unfiltered content of the internet, social media, porn and much more. Porn has been in its most accessible form today with categories ranging from BDSM, rape, agressive and abusive where women are potrayed to enjoy the gagging, choking, slapping as much as being spit upon, and with each episode you need more and more agressive porn to experience the kick. Porn being the first exposure for any Indian school going kid to sex education becomes quite problematic.

To glorify and justify the behaviour are some “dank” and “edgy” meme pages who in a split second call a girl “randi”, “thot”, “whore” or a “cunt” to end the argument or the conversation because that is the most funniest thing any dank edgy meme page admin could do. When a girl talks logic she is labelled as a feminazi to construct ignorance and faces comments like “how about you go to the kitchen and give your opinions there as to what to cook, haha” , “you don’t need feminism, you need therapy, lmao”.

Imagine what a 16 or 17 year old would infer from this. This, I believe is the troublesome paradox of the internet as to how sexism on these meme pages are referred to as casual and pervasive, where the target audience of these pages and sites just hit about right. Misogyny that swamp women in these memes manage to get in the head of a teenager justifying the immoral objectification, sexually agressive and permissive behaviour towards the opposite gender which comes out in the form of the most offensive and shrewd ways in everyday life towards their classmates, acquaintances, and every person of the opposite sex.

At an age where peer and social pressure pushes a stronger message than parents can potentially do and the dopamine rush is much greater than morals, these factors create a magnifying effect to all that the teen is exposed to. The exposure to them is a crucial part as one grows up and faces these phases but we can choose to filter out content as active and responsible users where parents come in and play an important role in making their child unlearn the toxic notions and overpower the typical trash ones. This is probably a tough and long way to proceed but the only one to create a safe environment around us for everyone irrespective of the genders.
